I read it years ago when I was going through a sci-fi phase. I liked it. In fact, I'd happily read it again.

The person who said that sci-fi novels can often be read as a commentary of the culture contemporary to when they were written makes a good point. It might be worth reading 'The Time Machine' in the context of the industrial advances made in Victorian Britain and the politics (particularly left-wing politics) that arose out of them.

HG Wells, at least in the two books of his ive read (time machine and War of the Worlds) has a somewhat dry slow-paced styler better suited to oral storytelling than reading in my personal opinion (im sure you've heard about the fiasco when war of the worlds was read on the radio and people though it was real, if you haven't, look it up)
so if you find that you are having a difficult time getting through his books, i'd suggest finding and unabridged audiobook version.

i read the "illustrated classics" version back in middle school, then i had to read the real one for hs, all i can say is the "illustrated classics" version is Highly abridged and even adds some scenes not in the actual book, so be careful what version you read (make sure not to get an abridged one).

he also (at least in those 2 books) never names his main characters. they are always refered to as "the man" or "the time traveller" i think i read somewhere that this is so the reader can imagine the character as whoever they want them to be.

It was considered very modern and thoughtful when published in 1900.Basically a man invents a time machine and tries it out, discovering new worlds in the process.Similar to Jules Verne's novels about "Around the world in 80 Days" and "20,000 leagues under the sea".It may be a slow read as most writers set the plot at a slow pace in older books.(No sci-Fi block buster movies back then.)

You mean the time machine? I heard it is boring and that the guy only talks about his journey with small people. Just stick with it or sparknotes it.

A bit dated compared to more current sci-fi (as with much sci-fi, it is also contemporary commentary), but it's excellent, as are most of Wells' books.

You mean "The Time Machine"? It's a classic of SF literature, and I quite liked it. But I like SF. If it's not your genre, you might not like the book.
